From a personal perspective, training your body improves everyday capabilities - from having the strength to carry groceries to maintaining muscle mass and balance as you age. It builds confidence and self-efficacy as you set and achieve goals. The discipline required for consistent training often carries over into other areas of life.
Training with your yoga practice in mind allows you to make progress in a more specific way, rather than forcing things or coming up against barriers related to strength or flexibility - you are preparing your body for practice. Training and moving helps us develop physical resilience.
For me, practice is still about the state of presence and awareness that we can achieve during and after. Physical preparation allows me to avoid frustration on the way.
It doesn’t matter if you have never specifically trained in a gym. I only ever practiced yoga online for the first couple of years and it took me years to go to an actual gym. But slowly I discovered the benefits of strength training and developing flexibility through researching, then getting a coach and finally undertaking the training to become a yoga teacher and a personal trainer so that I could share these things with more people!
